Re: Business development

Anyone in this field will tell you that it's hard work and when it comes to evaluations...grading the intangibles is often elusive. At the end of the day it comes down to the numbers.

A couple years ago I tossed my formal "sales" training out the window. I used to rely heavily on demonstrating logic, savings, efficiencies, and setting the stage to create win-win scenarios. Which are all great tools to make the sale but they don't carry the same impact as developing a genuine relationship. In fact, I still use those 'make the sale' tools in exploring the connection but they are by no means my leading stride.

I learned to focus on the person on the other end of the transaction, not their job, their company, just them and the subtle clues that they give me about their current state. (This is where a lot of people will roll their eyes thinking "Feelings? Really...). However, there is a make or break moment where you will be defined as a person or a robot.

There is power in actually having a conversation before going straight into your "ask/pitch". I've lingered in that moment for minutes… before moving on. By the time I'm ready to ask for anything (regardless of the pending answer) I've set the foundation for a genuine contact and a possible friend. That fact alone reduces pressure on both ends even though the other person knows that you are going to ask for something. After all, that is why you reached out in the first place.

Smart and Simply stated.... This is my favourite quote from the 2012 Democratic National Convention!

Obama: “If you turn away now -- if you buy into the cynicism that the change we fought for isn’t possible…well, change will not happen. If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other voices will fill the void... Only you can make sure that doesn’t happen. Only you have the power to move us forward.” -DNC 2012

I am looking for stories to refer to a friend working on a TV show. If you know anyone who is on the cusp of greatness and just needs one thing that could change their life forever. I want to know who they are! They have to be someone who is anchored in pure intention, truth, and has to have a need!
